The ConnectOcean Citizen Science Explorer Program

The ConnectOcean Citizen Science Explorer Program was created in support of the United Nations’ Ocean Literacy for All initiative and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).

Introduction

Ocean Literacy in Action

The united nations’ ocean literacy for all initiative and the UN decade of ocean science for sustainable development both call for a new relationship between people and the ocean — one built on understanding, participation, and shared responsibility.

Our program brings those ideas to life by transforming global ocean literacy principles into hands-on community action. From classrooms to coastlines, we help communities Discover, Connect, and Protect the ecosystems that link us all — following the natural flow of water from source to sea.

At ConnectOcean, we believe the best way to learn about the ocean is to get your hands wet. The Citizen Science Explorer Program turns learning into adventure — blending discovery, exploration, and action. It invites communities to become explorers in their own backyards: to study a mangrove, map a reef, test the waters of a local stream, or protect a coastline that sustains life both above and below the surface.

These aren’t just lessons — they’re living experiences.
Each Explorer journey combines STEM learning, ocean stewardship, and citizen science, connecting participants with local researchers, conservationists, and mentors who guide them through real projects with measurable impact.

Our curriculum follows the natural flow of water — from source to sea — exploring the interconnected ecosystems that shape life on Earth:

Source to Sea Explorer – Watersheds

Follow the journey of water from mountain to ocean. Learn how healthy rivers, streams, and groundwater systems sustain all life — and how pollution and land use upstream affect everything downstream. Discover practical ways communities can protect freshwater ecosystems and keep the ocean thriving from its very source.

Manta Trust Conservation Explorer

Join the Manta Trust in uncovering the world of manta rays — gentle giants that inspire awe and understanding. Learn about their biology, behavior, and role in healthy ocean ecosystems. Contribute to ongoing research through citizen science and become part of global efforts to protect these remarkable species.

Mangrove Explorer

Step into the tangled roots of the mangrove forest — one of nature’s most vital coastal protectors. Explore how these habitats filter water, store carbon, and shelter marine life. Learn hands-on methods to monitor and restore mangroves, turning your local coastline into a living barrier against climate change.

Intertidal Explorer

Discover the ever-changing world between land and sea. From tide pools to sandy flats, this course reveals the incredible adaptations of species that thrive in this harsh environment. Learn how tides, temperature, and human impact shape intertidal life — and how communities can safeguard these resilient ecosystems.

Reef Explorer

Dive beneath the surface to uncover the vibrant world of coral reefs — the rainforests of the ocean. Explore coral biology, reef dynamics, and the threats facing these ecosystems. Learn citizen science techniques for monitoring reef health and discover how restoration projects are bringing reefs back to life.

Open Ocean Explorer

Venture offshore to explore the vast blue wilderness that covers most of our planet. Study ocean currents, plankton, and the delicate systems that regulate global climate. Learn how overfishing, pollution, and carbon imbalance affect the open ocean — and what communities can do to protect it.

Each experience deepens understanding, builds skills, and strengthens the connection between community and environment — because when people learn to explore the ocean, they also learn to protect it.
